Benefits & Messages

  • Supports Food Safety Education: Safe food storage begins with proper refrigeration. The WIC-branded fridge thermometer reinforces WIC’s role in educating families about food safety by helping them monitor and maintain safe refrigerator temperatures (at or below 40°F).
  • Promotes Breastmilk and Formula Safety: Breastmilk and formula must be stored at safe temperatures to prevent spoilage and protect infant health. A thermometer provides peace of mind and empowers caregivers to follow best practices for storing these vital sources of nutrition.
  • Increases Household Awareness of Food Safety Practices: Many families are unaware their refrigerator may be running too warm. Providing a thermometer encourages conversations around foodborne illness prevention, proper storage, and reducing waste—core messages of WIC’s nutrition education.
  • Strengthens WIC’s Public Health Impact: A low-cost but highly visible tool, the thermometer delivers long-term educational impact in the home. Featuring the WIC logo reminds families that WIC is a trusted resource for healthy living and food safety.
  • Promotes Equity in Household Resources: Many WIC families may not have access to this essential tool. By providing a reliable, easy-to-read thermometer at no cost, WIC helps bridge the gap in access to food safety tools.
  • Easy Integration Into Counseling and Distribution: Lightweight and durable, thermometers are easy to distribute and can be seamlessly integrated into nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support efforts.
